CoolSculpting® vs. Kybella®: Which is Better?

For patients who want to get their body summer-ready starting in the spring, there are several ways of achieving slimmer contours. Aside from lifestyle changes—such as diet and exercise—there are two popular options for reducing fat: Kybella® and
CoolSculpting®. Long Island’s Vitra Aesthetics Clinic explains that both CoolSculpting® and Kybella® are non-surgical treatments that are designed to reduce target isolated fat in specific areas of the body.

“Both types of treatments reduce stubborn fat, but there are some differences between them. While both treatments are effective, they work in different ways and have their unique benefits and drawbacks,” says the founder of the practice, master injector Joanne Vitale.

In this article, we will compare CoolSculpting® and Kybella® to help you determine which treatment may be best for you.

CoolSculpting®

CoolSculpting® is a non-invasive treatment that uses controlled cooling to freeze and destroy unwanted fat cells. During the treatment, a specialized applicator is placed on the target area, where the device delivers controlled cooling to the fat cells, causing them to crystallize and die. Over time, the body naturally gets rid of the dead fat cells through the lymphatic system, resulting in a gradual reduction of fat in the treated area.

CoolSculpting® is typically used to treat areas with stubborn fat, such as the abdomen, flanks, thighs, and upper arms. The treatment is generally well-tolerated, and patients can return to their regular activities immediately after the procedure. However, it can take several weeks or months to see the full results of the treatment. This is why it’s best to start treatments early in the year if you want to be bikini ready when summer comes around.

Joanne says: “This procedure works best on patients who have a BMI of less than 25. They may be already fit and athletic but want to minimize small pockets of fat on specific areas for more streamlined contours.”

Kybella®

Kybella® is an injectable treatment that uses a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid to destroy fat cells. Deoxycholic acid is a chemical produced naturally by the body to help it break up and absorb fat. During the treatment, the Kybella® solution is injected directly into isolated pockets of submental fat that can cause an unflattering appearance. The solution breaks down the fat cells, and the body naturally eliminates them over time, resulting in a more contoured and defined jawline.

Kybella® is commonly used to reduce double chins, and it can also be applied to bra rolls and other isolated areas. The treatment can be uncomfortable, and patients may experience swelling and bruising after the injections. However, this procedure typically requires fewer sessions than CoolSculpting®, and patients can see results in as little as four to six weeks.

How Do the Two Options Compare?

While both CoolSculpting® and Kybella® are effective treatments for reducing unwanted fat, they have their unique benefits and drawbacks. CoolSculpting® requires no needles or injections, while Kybella® involves a series of injections. CoolSculpting® can take several weeks or months to see the full results, while Kybella® can produce results in as little as four to six weeks.

“Each patient is different. Ultimately, the choice between CoolSculpting® and Kybella® will depend on your individual needs and goals. It's essential to consult with a qualified healthcare provider who can evaluate your condition and recommend the most appropriate treatment for you,” Joanne explains.

In summary, both CoolSculpting® and Kybella® are effective non-surgical treatments for reducing unwanted fat. While they work differently and have their unique benefits and drawbacks, they can both help you achieve a more sculpted, defined appearance. If you're considering one of these treatments, be sure to consult with a qualified healthcare provider to determine the best treatment plan for you.
