Can You Extend the Duration of Facial Fillers?

Patients are often curious about what would happen to their face if they were to stop having routine filler treatments. The team specializing in cosmetic dermatology at Bryn Mawr’s Cirillo Cosmetic Dermatology Spa explains that patients won’t need to worry about their face looking more wrinkled than it was prior to fillers if they were to go “cold turkey” on injections.

It’s important to know that fillers aren’t addictive, and you won’t look worse if you decide to stop having injections. One thing to remember, however, is that the results of facial fillers don’t last forever. They provide temporary results, with the injected product gradually disappearing over 12 to 18 months. In order to maintain the desired results of fillers, you will need to schedule regular touch-up treatments.

The duration of fillers depends upon the type and amount of filler used, genetic differences in the metabolism of the filler, and individual lifestyles. Most hyaluronic acid fillers last 12 to 18 months, while Sculptra® and Radiesse®—true collagen stimulators—last longer as they stimulate your body to make new collagen.  Decreasing exposure to sun, moderate use of alcohol, and not smoking will also help to prolong the duration of fillers. Fillers placed in areas of increased movement, such as the lips or around the mouth, will dissipate more quickly. Avid exercisers also notice that their filler disappears more rapidly.

While even qualified and experienced injectors can’t guarantee how long the results will last, there are some steps you can take to make the volumizing effects last longer between appointments.

Wear Sunscreen Daily

Remember to wear a sunscreen daily, as unprotected exposure to the sun can make filler break down more quickly. Wear a hat and sunglasses to provide further protection from the sun.

Maintain a Good Skincare Routine

Having a good skincare routine in general will ensure that you get the most out of filler treatments. Fillers and other injectables always work best when they’re combined with  medical grade skincare products. Retinoid containing skincare products are still the gold standard for decreasing and preventing the signs of aging.

Use Products Containing Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid (the primary ingredient in many facial fillers) containing skin creams and serums should be used daily to keep your skin well hydrated. When your skin is dehydrated, lines and wrinkles appear more prominent. Even though medical grade hyaluronic acid products won’t penetrate the skin as deeply as fillers, they work synergistically together to provide a more youthful, glowing appearance.
