How Can You Get Natural-Looking Lip Augmentation Results?

Full lips are thought to be one of the most attractive features a person can have. Whether they’re naturally thin, normal-sized, or plump, giving your lips a slight volume boost is a great way to increase your confidence. However, sometimes bigger isn’t always better when it comes to your lips. Most of us want shapely looking lips that balance out the rest of our features. Thus, if you naturally have small features, super big lips might not be the right look for you. Not everyone wants their lips to be the first thing others notice about them, or for people to think that they’ve had “work done.” The South Jersey Skin Care & Laser Center team provides cosmetic injectable procedures including lip augmentation at their New Jersey-based practice, and they frequently get questions from patients who wonder whether lip injections will make them look “fake.”

The good news is: It’s unlikely that your lip fillers will turn out bad. That undesirable artificial look is most likely to occur if your injector uses improper techniques. If you want gorgeous, full lips that still look as natural as possible and hope to avoid the overdone “duck face” look, here’s what the South Jersey Skin Care team recommends:

Plan Ahead

Although fillers are a fairly simple, quick, and low-risk treatment, you still need to do some research and plan ahead. It’s important to decide how big you would actually want your lips to be with filler. Most injectors stress the importance of avoiding overfilled lips at all costs, but it’s up to the patient to make that decision and ensure that their injector is fully aware of what kind of look they want. Instead of just showing them a picture of a celebrity, it’s better to explain what you hope to achieve. You can always do both!

Ensure That the Right Ratio is Used

Our lips naturally have varying amounts of fullness and thinness in certain areas. Additionally, the top and bottom lip aren’t the same size, so it’s important to get the proportions and angles right when you’re having filler. When an injector just adds the same amount of filler everywhere, the willy-nilly approach gives them a sausage-like appearance that won’t look right. An upper lip that has same volume or increased volume after fillers compared to the lower lip also tends to look unnatural.

It’s best for the lower lip to always be slightly larger than the upper one. Another thing to remember is that the Cupid’s bow (the V-shaped curve at the center of the upper lip) needs to be preserved. Significantly altering this area can make the fillers look fake. This is why it’s important for patients to go to a qualified and licensed injector who has significant experience with lip fillers along with a good artistic eye.

Use the Right Product

Each filler has a different focus, and there are a variety of options that can be used for the lips. Choosing the wrong lip filler product can also make your lips look unnatural. It’s better to use a very soft hyaluronic acid filler for your lips such as Juvederm Volbella®, which won’t add too much volume. You can always have more filler added if you need it. The majority of patients won’t need more than 1ml of product at most.

Enhance Rather Than Re-Create

The goal with lip fillers should be to improve on and highlight your existing lip shape rather than attempting to completely change it. Injectors should take a “less is more” approach and follow the natural shape of the lips rather than trying to overfill the lips. It’s up to the patient and injector to decide what size lips will look best for them.
